What is JOI?
JOI stands for jerk-off instruction: one person tells another, step by step, how and when to touch himself. It is guided solo play built on voice, pacing and permission.

01
Where the term comes from
The abbreviation spread through online adult video, where a performer speaks directly to the viewer. Who first used it is not recorded. Today it exists just as much in audio and in text, where the instruction itself is the whole experience.
JOI is a format as much as a kink. The name describes what happens, one person instructing another, and says nothing about the tone. That is why it appears in very different styles, from affectionate to severe.
02
How it works
One person gives directions, the other follows. The directions cover when to begin, how fast or slow to go, when to pause and when to stop. Countdowns, pauses and permission are the typical tools. Some sessions build toward a release that is granted at the end. Others end with an instruction to wait.
The person instructing speaks directly to the listener. That direct address is what separates JOI from a story or a description. It is said to you, about now.
It can be live or recorded. Live, between partners or on a call, the instructor reacts to the listener and adjusts. Recorded audio and written scripts follow a fixed course, and the listener decides whether to keep up. Both forms rest on the same thing: a voice that leads.
03
Why people like it
The appeal is handing over the pace. Someone else decides when to start, when to slow down and when to stop. The tone can be tender and encouraging or strict and teasing.
Solo play is usually private and silent. JOI turns it into something shared. Being talked through it means being attended to, and for many people that attention matters more than the instructions themselves. Others enjoy the element of obedience: a simple, clear way of following someone's lead.
Anticipation plays a part as well. Being made to wait, and not knowing how long, stretches a short private act into a longer experience. Many people find that the waiting is what they remember.
04
What it is not
JOI is not the same as dirty talk, which describes and teases without directing. It is not necessarily dominant either. A gentle, encouraging voice is as common as a strict one. And it is not humiliation by default. Humiliating styles exist, but they are a choice that has to be agreed, not part of the definition.
Although the term names a male listener, the format is not limited to men. Guided instruction works the same way for anyone, and some people use the broader phrase masturbation instruction for that reason.
It is also not a replacement for intimacy between partners. Couples use it alongside everything else, as one more way of paying attention to each other, in the same room or apart.
05
Common variations
The best-known variation is the countdown, in which the instructor counts toward a permitted finish. Edging means being brought close to release several times and held back. Orgasm control and denial extend the idea: the instructor decides whether release is allowed at all. Each of these raises the intensity and should be agreed beforehand.
Tone creates further variations. Encouraging JOI is warm and full of praise. Strict JOI uses rules and consequences. Some styles add teasing about the listener, which moves toward humiliation and needs clear agreement. The label alone does not say which kind is meant, so it is worth asking.
06
How to talk about it
With a partner, JOI is one of the easier wishes to raise, because it needs no equipment and can be stopped with a word. Say that you would like to be told what to do, or that you would like to do the telling, and ask which tone appeals: warm, playful or strict.
It also works at a distance. Couples who are apart use it on calls and in messages. Agree first that both have privacy and time, and that either can end it without explanation.
If you are the one giving instructions and feel unsure, keep it simple. Speak slowly, use short sentences and leave pauses. Nobody expects a performance. A partner's own voice, used with intent, is the point.

07
Boundaries
It helps to agree on the tone beforehand: gentle or strict, which words are welcome and which are not. A stop word applies here as in any other play. A short, friendly close afterwards keeps it from ending abruptly.
With a recording or a written text, the listener can pause at any time. Live, the instructor carries more responsibility and should check in, especially when denial or strict language is involved.

How it works in chat or with an AI companion
In text, JOI is reduced to its core: words and timing. Short messages set the pace, and the gaps between them do the work that pauses do in audio.
On Rendezvoir, adults book an AI companion for a fixed time and pay once, with no subscription. Sessions run in text and images. Voice messages are planned but not yet available. You choose a level, Suggestive, Sensual or Explicit, and can lower it at any time. The safeword is one tap away and stops the scene at once. Every companion is an AI, a fictional adult character.
Questions about JOI
- What does JOI stand for?
- JOI stands for jerk-off instruction: guided solo play directed by another person. The instructor decides the pace, the pauses and the end, and the listener follows. It exists in video, audio and text, live or recorded.
- Is JOI the same as dirty talk?
- Not quite. Dirty talk describes and teases. JOI instructs: it gives directions and sets the pace. The two are often combined, but the mark of JOI is the direct instruction and the handing over of control to the person speaking.
- Does JOI need video?
- No. It works in audio and in text, because it relies on words and timing rather than on images. Many people prefer audio or written instruction, since it leaves more to the imagination and keeps the attention on the voice.
- What is a JOI countdown?
- A countdown is the best-known tool in JOI. The instructor counts down, and release is permitted only at the end. The counting can slow, pause or start again, which is how the instructor keeps control of the timing.
- Is JOI a form of domination?
- It can be. Following instructions is a mild form of giving up control, and strict styles lean clearly toward domination. Many versions are gentle and encouraging, with no power play intended. The tone is a choice and worth agreeing on beforehand.
- Is JOI only for men?
- The term refers to a male listener, but the format is not limited to men. Guided instruction works the same way for anyone. Some people use the broader phrase masturbation instruction when they want to make that clear.

Femdom ideas and tasks for a first scene
Femdom ideas for a first scene are small acts of leading: she chooses, he asks permission, and one or two rules hold for the evening. Good first tasks are easy to check and easy to do well, such as a message at a set time or a room prepared exactly as told. Agree on limits and a safeword first.

Sexless marriage: what it means and what people do about it
A sexless marriage is one in which the couple has little or no sex over a long stretch, and at least one of them minds. It is common, it usually arrives gradually, and it says more about tiredness, resentment, health or habit than about love. Couples who change it almost always start by talking about it plainly, often with a counselor in the room.
