How to talk dirty without feeling silly

To talk dirty without feeling silly, use your own voice and say true things: what you notice, what you like and what you want next. Start quietly, with one sentence, and build from the reaction you get. Ask beforehand which words your partner enjoys and which they never want to hear.

01

Why it feels silly

Dirty talk feels silly when you try to sound like someone else. Most people imagine a script from a film, hear themselves say it and cringe. The fix is not more courage. It is plainer words.

You are not performing. You are telling one person what is going on in your head, at a moment when they very much want to know. Seen that way, it is closer to honesty than to acting.

It also helps to know that your partner is not grading you. They are busy enjoying themselves, and almost anything said with warmth at that moment sounds good. The bar is much lower than you fear.

02

Start by describing

The easiest dirty talk is narration. Say what you see, what you feel and what you like, in the present tense. "I love it when you look at me like that" is a complete sentence and needs no special vocabulary.

Describing has a second advantage: it is always true, so it never sounds forced. You can stay at this level for as long as you like. Many couples never leave it and do not miss anything.

If full sentences feel like too much, start with sounds and single words. "Yes." "There." "Again." Their name. These count, and they are how most people begin without ever deciding to.

03

Three registers that always work

Almost all dirty talk is one of three things: praise, instruction or anticipation. Pick the one that feels most like you and begin there.

Praise suits people who are generous by nature. Instruction suits people who like to lead. Anticipation suits the patient, and it has the added advantage that you can say it hours earlier, fully dressed, over dinner.

  1. 1

Praise: "You look incredible right now." Say what is good, and be specific about it.

  2. 2

Praise: "That. Exactly that. Don't change a thing."

  3. 3

Instruction: "Look at me." Three words, and often the most effective line there is.

  4. 4

Instruction: "Slower. I want this to last."

  5. 5

Anticipation: "I have been thinking about this since lunch."

  6. 6

Anticipation: "I'm going to take my time with you tonight."

  7. 7

A question: "Tell me what you want." Then wait for the answer.

  8. 8

A question: "Do you like that?" It is simple, and it also happens to be a check-in.

  9. 9

Their name, said slowly and on its own. It is the shortest line there is, and it rarely fails.

04

Use your voice, not a new one

Speak lower and slower than usual, and close to the ear. That is the whole technique. Volume works against you, and a whisper makes ordinary words sound private.

Leave pauses. A sentence, then silence, lands harder than a running commentary. If you run out of words, a single "yes" or their name is enough to keep the thread.

Start earlier in the evening than you think. A sentence murmured in the kitchen, or in the car on the way home, is easier to say than one in bed, because nothing depends on it yet. By the time you get to the bedroom you have already broken the silence.

05

Find out what they want to hear

Ask outside the bedroom, when nobody is on the spot. Some people love being praised. Some want to be told what to do. Some like teasing, and some find it off-putting. You will not guess this correctly, so ask.

A simple way in is to trade: each of you names one thing you would love to hear and one word you never want to hear. That is enough for a first try, and it takes the guesswork out of the first sentence.

If asking out loud is too much, do it in writing. A text that says "I would like to try saying more in bed, what would you enjoy hearing?" gives your partner time to think and spares you both a blush.

06

Consent, limits and a safeword

Words can go wrong as easily as actions. A name or a phrase that excites one person can hurt another, so agree on what is off the table before you experiment. Rougher language and teasing in particular need a clear yes in advance.

Keep a safeword, even if you only ever talk. One agreed word, such as "red", means the game stops and you speak normally. It lets both of you try bolder lines, because you know how to end them.

Watch as well as listen. If your partner goes quiet, stiffens or looks away after a line, stop and ask in your ordinary voice whether that was all right. Asking does not spoil the mood. Carrying on past a flinch does.

07

When you laugh, and afterwards

You will say something that comes out wrong. Everybody does. Laugh, kiss them and carry on. Laughing together in bed is not a failure of the mood. It usually means you trust each other.

Afterwards, tell each other which line worked. "I liked it when you said my name" is useful information, and it makes the next attempt easier. If something stung, say that too, kindly and soon.

Give it three or four tries before you judge it. The first time is mostly nerves. By the third, you will have two or three lines that are reliably yours, and that is all most people ever need.

Try it with Tessa

Practice helps, and it is easier with someone who goes first. On Rendezvoir, adults book an AI companion for a fixed time and pay once, with no subscription. Sessions run in text and images. Voice messages are planned but not yet available.

Tessa is the house's dirty talker: fast, funny and impossible to embarrass. "If I go too far, say so and I'll dial it down," she says. "If I don't go far enough, well. You know where the dial is." You pick the level and can lower it at any time, and the safeword is one tap away. She is an AI and a fictional adult character.

Questions

How do you start talking dirty?
Start with one true sentence in your normal voice, spoken quietly: what you like about what is happening right now. "I love it when you do that" is enough. Watch the reaction and build from there.
What if I feel embarrassed talking dirty?
Use fewer and plainer words. Describe instead of performing, whisper instead of speaking up, and tell your partner you feel shy. Most partners find that endearing, and the embarrassment fades after the first few sentences.
What do people like to hear in bed?
It varies, which is why you should ask. Common favorites are specific praise, their own name, simple instructions and being told they are wanted. Ask your partner for one thing they would love to hear and one they would not.
Can you practice dirty talk on your own?
Yes. Say lines aloud when you are alone so your own voice stops surprising you, or write them down first. You can also practice with an AI companion on Rendezvoir, where you set the level and can lower it at any time.
